Rio das ostras is A city located less than 30 km from city Macaé and about 165 km from Rio de Janeiro. Rio das Ostras has just above 105 000 inhabitants and is a strongly growing city. A place of exuberant nature, sun and beaches. Here you can find 15 beaches and can choose between beaches with calm water for swimming or wilder with great waves for surfing. Rio das ostras is a bit cheaper than Buzios and with less tourists especially foreign tourists, so if you wish to meet Brazilian people this is a better option than Buzios. When people travel to Rio de Janeiro they usually visit Buzios or maybe Petropolis, but this is not a very common destination for many foreign tourists but a very charming city.
What do they have and what can you do in Rio das Ostras?
Parque dos pássaros: A park with birds which is the greatest in South America with about 190 different species and some of them very rare and endangered.

Pier de costazul: It is a pier which
stretches out 200 meters, the view over Costa do sul is really beautiful
and perfect to observe the sunset from there. It is a suitable spot to
stay and take beautiful pictures over costa do sul as well.
Praça da baleia: a market place with
an enormous whale sculpture, 20 meter in length which makes it the
biggest homage of a cetacean in the world.
For the one who likes Jazz and Blues, they have a great Jazz and Blues Festival usually in June and has therefore been called the capital of Jazz and Blues in Brazil.
Lagoa do Iriri (Lagoa da coca-cola)
: Lake with a very dark water which is called Coca Cola lake by the
inhabitants. Due to the large concentration of iodine in the water, the
lake gets the color like coca cola.
These three beaches I recommend: Costa do sul, Centro and Praia do Cemitério.
Centro: perfect for the one who enjoys a tranquil beach but not with the lack of bars, restaurants and kiosks.
Costa do sul: the beach is 2.3 km long and a very good beach for surfers.
Praia do Cemitério a good beach with calm water perfect for swimming and has also several bars and restaurants.
I think Rio das Ostras is worth staying 1 or 2 days on your visit in Rio de Janeiro.
